You hear stories and watch news reports about drunk driving accidents, but you probably think that it’s the kind of stuff that would never happen to you. In reality, three out of every ten US drivers will be involved in an alcohol-related accident during their lives. The danger is real and it can touch your life. Stay safe with these tips to prevent drunk driving.
Going Out
If you’re planning to hit a few bars or go to a friend’s house party, remember to make responsible choices. Talk to your friends and choose a designated driver, someone who agrees to avoid alcohol consumption in favor of safely driving everyone home at the end of the night.
Even if the designated driver slips and has a few drinks, none of you have to get behind the wheel. Call a cab, use a ride sharing service or crash at a nearby friend’s place
Throwing a Party
Inviting guests over is another situation entirely. It’s up to you to monitor your guests to ensure that none of them walk out the door while intoxicated. Encourage sober driving by putting away the alcohol about an hour before the party ends. Also, make sure to serve food, water and other non-alcoholic beverages.
If a guest appears to be drunk, don’t hesitate to take away his or her keys. No matter your friend’s reaction, it’s for the best. You can allow your buddy to crash at your place or you can arrange a ride with another sober guest or a cab.
Spotting a Drunk Driver
When driving, take notice of cars that are swerving, driving unusually slow, making abrupt turns or displaying other signs of driving under the influence. If you suspect a drunk driver, pull over to keep yourself safe and call 911 to report the incident.
