As with any vehicle, many people hope to get the best resale price when it comes time to sell or trade in their RVs. You may not be thinking about that time when you first buy a new motorhome, but there are plenty of things you can do over the years to help protect its resale value for the future. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Maintenance: Every motor vehicle requires routine maintenance as listed in the owner’s manual. Staying up to date on maintenance will keep your RV in the best possible shape. This helps increase the lifespan of the vehicle, as well as increasing the likelihood of a higher resale value. It may also be helpful to keep mechanic receipts to protect warranties.

Records: Apart from the owner’s manual and mechanic receipts, you should also hold onto instruction manuals for appliances and accessories. Some people also log mileage and travel information. Potential buyers may wish to see this information.

Cleaning: Keeping your RV clean and tidy helps keep the interior looking sharp through your travels. While it’s important to shampoo the outside of the vehicle to rid it of corrosive road grime, you must also care for interior leather, vinyl, upholstery, carpet and more. A good rule of thumb is to thoroughly wash your RV at least twice each year.

Age and Mileage: The resale value of RVs trends downward as the vehicles age and accumulate miles. At around eight years old, it’s usually time to refurbish the engine and/or transmission, which is a significant cost. Keep this is mind as you decide when to sell the RV.

Upgrades: There will likely be more interest in buying a used RV that has been upgraded. Newer appliances, reupholstered furniture, plumbing repairs and other improvements are welcomed by potential buyers because they make the vehicle feel newer and more comfortable.
