Have you been caught in a driving offense that requires you to file for SR-22 auto insurance? That often means you were driving without a valid license, driving without auto insurance, driving recklessly, driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol or busted for numerous accidents and/or tickets on record. After you’ve come to terms with the consequences of your actions, what comes next?
Contact your independent insurance agent for assistance through the SR-22 insurance process. You’ll have a file an SR-22 form, which generally costs about $25. If you’re not currently insured, you will need to purchase an auto insurance policy and you may be required to pay for the entire term before filing the SR-22 form.
After that’s taken care of, your agent will file the SR-22 form with the Department of Motor Vehicles, which will also enter you into a database that the police can monitor in case you accrue more violations. At this point, you are likely to regain driving privileges (if they were revoked).
Your SR-22 status will last anywhere from one to five years, depending on the severity of your offense. During this time, you must maintain auto insurance. If your policy lapses for any reason, your insurance carrier will notify the DMV and your license can be suspended or revoked. You will need to refile a new SR-22 form if you move out of state or switch insurance carriers.
SR-22 insurance is quite a bit pricier than normal coverage because you’ve proven to be riskier to insure. However, improving your driving habits can help you regain lower rates once you’ve met your SR-22 obligation.
