How SR-22 Insurance Differs From Auto Insurance

The term SR-22 insurance is deceptive because it’s not actually true coverage. So what is it? An SR-22 is a form that must be filed with your insurance provider after certain driving transgressions, such as driving under the influence, driving without insurance and causing multiple accidents within a short period of time. Essentially, this document serves as proof to the Department of Motor Vehicles that you own auto insurance.

An SR-22 is something that is added to an auto insurance policy, which means that you cannot file an SR-22 if you don’t already own coverage. It’s important to maintain your auto insurance for the full amount of time that you’re required to hold an SR-22 status.

Any lapse or cancellation will result in your insurance provider notifying the DMV, which may lead to a license suspension until compliance is once again met.

Filing an SR-22 form often requires you to pay an affordable flat fee, but as a result, your auto insurance rates are likely to increase due to your new high-risk status. How big of an increase you’ll see will depend on your driving record, with fewer infractions leading to smaller rate hikes. However, once your SR-22 requirement is fulfilled, you may once again be eligible for lower rates.

Have you been notified that you must file for SR-22 insurance? Your independent insurance agent can assist you through the process and help you find the best deal on auto insurance available to high-risk drivers. Give us a call today.
