If you drive under the influence of alcohol, you pose a huge risk not just to yourself but others on the road.
Often, drunk drivers receive DUI charges. As a result of the charge, they might need to obtain an SR-22 certificate. Should you receive this penalty, you have to work with your auto insurance provider.
An SR-22 is a form that shows proof of existing auto insurance to your state DMV. It helps assure the state that, because of your DUI history, you have insurance coverage.
An SR-22 certificate is not an insurance policy itself. The person required to carry the certificate must first obtain an adequate policy. Then, the driver’s insurance agent will issue the SR-22 certificate to the state.
Sometimes, this is easier said than done. Some insurers refuse to cover SR-22 drivers. Therefore, when you get a DUI charge and have to get an SR-22, talk to your insurance agent. They can let you know if your existing policy will cover your increased driving risks.
The SR-22 requirement means you also have to keep your policy active at all times. Do not let it lapse. If you do so, the SR-22 period may start over and you may face harsher penalties. Maintain open communications with your insurance agent as long as you have an SR-22.
Drivers should do everything they can to reduce the chances that they receive a DUI charge. The best way to do so is to never drive drunk. You can do this through several means.
If you plan to drink during a social outing, make alternative transportation arrangements. This may include hiring a ride-share or taxi, appointing a designated driver, or leaving a responsible person in charge of your keys. Never assume that just because you feel okay that you are completely sober.
If a DUI charge does occur, don’t wait to notify your auto insurance provider. He or she can advise you on the next steps.
